Singapore 3rd - 5th April 2012

Larry took us for drinks at Tower bar, an exclusive, American club members only bar on the top floor of one of the three tallest buildings in Singapore. In the evening we went for dinner on the harbour at Palm Beach restaurant. We ordered a huge Chilli Sri Lankan Crab and Golden Milk prawns. Very messy eating but nice taste. A quick (and hot) walk around Esplanade and concert hall worked off our huge dinner a bit.
We were spoiled rotten by Mel's Auntie and Uncle whilst we were there but we both really liked Singapore. It seems an easy place to go and live. With it's huge ex-pat population - a result of the Singapore government offering tax incentives to large companies to set up offices there - we heard more European languages and accents than local when wondering around the centre. I had visited a few years ago, shortly after the Marina Bay Sands hotel was completed. Even since then it seems to have changed and become more confident (or cocky) in itself as a city- there's more designer shops and 'bling' around the city, elaborate buildings are springing up anywhere with views of the impressive looking Marina Bay Sands, which now offers an hourly, after-dark light show for the entire city to enjoy. (Judging by Larry and Lilly's groans at the sight of it though, the locals are already getting tired of the show.) Despite this it still manages to be a very clean and safe city comparitively speaking. Also unlike other cities, the roads in Singapore don't feel slow or congested, no doubt due to the exorbitant costs of owning a car in Singapore; before you even pay double the price for the cost of the car, you have to buy a certificate for it for a mere $80,000. Driving around, it seems is a statement of wealth, especially considering the cheap cost and efficiency of public transport and taxis.
